Month of Photography at The Bus Stop Gallery NoBo - Alternative Landscapes: Dona Laurita, Marie Bush, Matt Lancaster
Join us at NoBo Bus Stop Gallery in NoBo Arts District, Boulder - Opening Reception - for this compelling 3-person show, “Alternative Landscapes,” in celebration of the 2025 Month of Photography Festival. Dona Laurita, Marie Bush, and Matt Lancaster present nature-based photographic and multi-media works that diverge from the traditional paradigm of landscape photography into personal visions, themes, and presentations.
Dona Laurita’s “Liminal Spaces” is a collection of ambiguous dreamscapes printed on silk. The elements of this installation are delicate and strong; the thin silk veil substrates selected for use create a near clash with the stainless steel that suspends and affixes each piece. Playing with this juxtaposition, the tension of the artwork leads the viewer into mysterious and uneasy landscapes, much like liminal spaces of uncertainty can. The collection delves into the delicate boundary between life and death and the profound themes of life and loss. Combining text, lighting, and moving visuals creates a powerful experience that promises to leave a lasting impression. These ethereal images express the complex emotions often accompanying life and its alterations.
Marie Bush presents “Where I Find Sanctuary,” photographs created within wilderness areas of Colorado, Maine, Pennsylvania, and California. Her in-camera multiple exposure techniques create dream-like images to express a mood. Though an image may appear abstract and impressionistic, the feelings are subliminal. Through her images, she hopes to convey a sense of refuge, inspiration, and renewal to the viewer.
Matt Lancaster’s series of mixed media works, “Imagined Realities,” exemplifies the emotional impact places and natural elements have on him. His process begins experimentally with a camera to create abstract compositions and intimate vignettes that cast Earthly elements into dynamic states. The subsequent layering of encaustic (hot wax) imbues ambiguity to the work and adds body to the two-dimensional images. Then the subjects transform, shifting between shadow and light, ground plane and sky, familiar and strange. Lastly, Matt presents them as sets of 4 works – Quattros – to immerse the viewer in his emotional states.
